Como Park Dog Off Leash Area

The carpark at the end of Como Avenue overlooks the large kingdom for dogs far below. Near the carpark is a fenced playground, tables, seats and bin.

A steep path leads down the hill to the sunken oval below which is the main area for dogs. On the western side of the oval is Como Park Pavilion which has toilets, bin, basketball court and water tap with bowl. On the north side is busy Alexandra Avenue and on the east side is Williams Road but there aren't any fences. There is also another water tap with bowl on the south side of the oval. The oval is ringed by trees and there are some seats around the oval.

If you want a bit of history check out the canon overlooking the oval. The artillery piece was built in 1864 and one of six issued to the Victorian Volunteer Artillery in 1865. It was acquired by the City of Prahran in 1904 and placed in Como Park in 1921.

Some history of Como Park - The Wurundjeri people-used the river, the billabong and its surrounds in this area prior to European settlement. During the 1840's the land in this area was subdivided and sold. In 1847 the original Como House was built and the estate was developed including the land to the Yarra River. The present Como Park was largely covered by a billabong. The owners of Como used the area along the river for dairying. In 1921 the then Prahran City Council purchased 14 hectares from the Owners of the Como Estate between the house and the Yarra River to be developed as a park. The billabong, by then little more than a swamp, was filled to form Como oval. In 1930 further development commenced including tree planting and the linking Williams Road and Alexandra Avenue.



Note: Across Alexandra Avenue to the north is Como Park North. Dogs are only allowed on-leash in this area.
