Due to the predominately rural nature of the municipality, Wellington Shire Council nominates dog on lead areas, rather than dog off lead areas. Apart from the nominated areas listed below, dogs can be exercised without leads, provided they remain in the effective control of the person walking them. All dogs are required to be placed on a lead at all times in the following designated areas: Johnson Street (Between Foster and McMillan Streets), Fred Drury Park (Carpenter Street), Lions Park Playground Area (Johnson Street), Macalister Wetland Reserve Area (Flora and Fauna Risk), Island Reserve/Port of Maffra, Macalister River Regional Park (McMahon Drive). There are public toilets at 96 Little Johnson Street and Macalister Park.
