The beach south of the river mouth to the four wheel drive access point known as sand mines is a dog off leash area. Direct access is with a 4WD but the easiest access is to take the stunning 1.2km long Urunga Boardwalk (on-leash for dogs) to reach the sandy off-leash beach which has opportunities for a swim and splash. The boardwalk starts behind the Holiday Park.
