History:
From the 1830s noxious industries were established along the shore of Blackwattle Bay, and by the 1850s Blackwattle Bay was polluted by the effluent. Council sought to solve this severe problem by reclaiming the waters of the swamp, at an estimated cost of 10,000 pounds.
Between 1876 and 1880, the swamp and foreshore area were filled with silt deposits dredged from the harbour, and sea walls and dykes were constructed. Residential and industrial buildings and yards soon occupied the reclaimed land at Blackwattle Bay, and Ultimo and Pyrmont developed Into part of the industrial heartland of Sydney.
When the area was filled, trustees were appointed to manage the new park and a competition was announced to design the new facility. By 1882 ovals, greens, paths, lakes and other facilities were completed, and the park was named after NSW Statesman William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872).
